I could be a smartass and say “all of them”, but in the luxury/performance market Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus, and Infiniti all qualify. Hell, the Chevy SS qualifies. BMWs are no longer built with the same long-term quality that earned them their reputation.

Owning and working on BMWs professionally for 20 years. I have three now. All I’m saying is they don’t build as durable or rewarding a car as they used to. Others do the whole package better, in my opinion.

I can, because I’ve owned and worked on them professionally for 20 years and know how they do things now. If I see 4 year old cars with less than 70,000 miles require several thousand dollars in repairs on a regular basis, or even numerous less expensive repairs, and I know they now use more complicated developments of the same systems, and I know how some of their dealers behave (service departments, I mean. I am in no way criticizing the OP), it’s a pretty safe assumption that they’ve not improved. I’m not saying they’re not nice to drive, or don’t look good, I’m saying that you used to be able to buy a new BMW and reasonably expect well over, even double, 100,000 miles on regular maintenance alone. Those days are gone. Arguably none of the Europeans build cars like that any more, because they’ve figured out that planned obsolescence makes more money than sound engineering.

Funny, I also used to work at a dedicated VW/Audi speed shop and feel the opposite. The two companies whose cars I haven’t been without since about 1996 is VWAG and BMW, I want to love them both. Some VW/Audis are crap, yes, but BMW now has problems across the range as far as I’m concerned. Even the paint and weatherstripping is crap. I’ll admit they’ve never screwed up the 3-series too badly as long as you stick to normally aspirated sixes, but since the E90 even they have had much larger shortcomings than any previous model.
